The timeless design of the gold lunula has appealed to me for a long time so it has been a really lovey experience to recreate the ones in the Cornwall Museum in the form of this modern golden lunula made from granite forged brass.
This week sees the beginning of a very exciting exhibition at Pistachios Gallery in Chicago. Precious Collective is an international community of jewellers bound together by the ambiguous definition of what ‘precious’ actually is in relation to jewellery. Pistachios is a prestigious contemporary art jewellery gallery in the heart of Chicago with a long reputation for excellence.
It is a bit like sketching, working with the boulders and tors to imprint the unique quality of each carefully selected granite form. I try out a small area to see if I like the marks left in the silver surface then hammer a length of sheet metal to use at a later date.
I’ve always been inspired by light and texture, from my photography darkroom days to my current exploration of metal surface and unique stones. Read here for more detail on why I love these things so much.
The silver takes on the texture of the stone it’s hammered against so each piece is an imprint of a geological time capsule. I love this idea and that I am outside making the first markings on the silver.
The world of Substack has allowed me to take little journeys into other people’s lives and find a community which is alive with ideas and overflowing with beautiful words.
