Timeless design for a modern golden lunula.
Golden Lunula
I am so proud of this piece. Jenn looks beautiful wearing my golden lunula, she was the perfect model for these photos and the autumn light and the warm tones in the trees made for a lovely afternoon photographing her.
The timeless design of the gold lunula has appealed to me for a long time so it has been a really lovey experience to recreate the ones in the Cornwall Museum in the form of this modern golden lunula made from granite forged brass.
I have also made 4 pairs of earings to sit along side this piece. Each pair is different with silver hooks and pins. They will all be on display for the first time at the first Cornish jewellery exhibition at the Cornwall museum on the 31st October 2025.
On the sustainability of Brass and its environmental impact.
Brass is made from an alloy of copper and zinc. Both these materials are mined from the ground and the traceability of supply chains isn’t easy to find when buying brass. This piece has been made from factory off-cuts which I collected from a place about 3 miles from my studio. It isn’t recycled brass but it would have been considered waste. This is a new learning adventure for me and I will be on the look out for a good recycled brass supplier, please let me know if you are aware of one!
Brass can be endlessly recycled without degrading or loosing its durability. This makes it an ideal metal for heirloom jewellery that doesn’t have the price tag of precious metals. It is also non-toxic with anti-microbial properties and develops a lovely patina over time if left unpolished.
By using recycled brass, we can save material going to landfill and reduce the use of new metals being mined from the earth.
