Men-an-Tol ancient monument in Cornwall

Tresor Jewellery Fair 2026

My one- off design for Myths and Legends at Cornwall Museum in Truro, Cornwall

Tresor Jewellery Fair 2026 - Myth and Legend

I chose the beautiful form of Men-an-Tol for this years show. Men-an-Tol translates roughly to the ‘holed stone’ and legend has it that if you were suffering from back pain or rickets, you were to crawl through the stone to be cured. Passing through the hole was central to the healing process with importance being attached to the direction, the number of times and the point on the lunar cycle. The holed stone was also believed to aid fertility and its powers were sought by barren women, pregnant women seeking easy childbirth and farmers seeking bountiful crops. See Cornwall Guide or Caspyn https://cornishancientsites.com/ancient-sites/ for more in depth information.

The brass has been hammered against granite in West Penwith and the silver has been textured by reticulation, heating and cooling the silver a number of times just as people passed through the stone.

These are a one-off pair of earrings and will be available for the first time at the show on the 23rd October.
