Talisman Unique Pieces
Inspired by Cornish stone walls covered in lichens,
This oxidised silver and recycled gold brooch is designed with the names of some the British lichens which grow on the sea wall at Trelissick beach in Cornwall. The names are etched into the surface and add texture and detail to the piece while reminding you that these small lives are precious and beautiful.
I hand write the words onto the recycled silver before etching to give a raised design which you can feel when you run your finger over the textured surface.
There are many smaller, less well known places (in the UK) that are home to a wonderful kaleidoscope of mosses, lichens and plants.
Walls offer considerable opportunities for colonization by marine and maritime lichens. In lowland Britain where rocks are not exposed on the shore, walls of brick, concrete or flint may bear the only seashore lichen floras, adding considerably to the biodiversity of the site. Generally however, walls have a less rich lichen flora than natural rocks because they are much younger. Fletcher (1997) found that walls near to habitations had the richest lichen floras because they were the most useful and were therefore better maintained, but they were not necessarily the oldest. British Lichen Society.
The Talisman project is about lost words and species on the edge of extinction – wild flowers, birds, kelp forests, sea grass and, of course, lichen. They are Talisman pieces of jewellery to be worn and loved and remind the wearer that nature is important. We are part of nature, not separate from it, and we all need to take more care.
- A donation from the sale of this piece will go directly to charity.

Contemporary gold Talisman Bangles inspired by nature.
The Talisman range is inspired by researching red list species after reading ‘The Running Hare’ by John Lewis-Stemple and ‘Rewilding’ by Isabella Tree.
Each Talisman Bangle is inspired by the names of rare species of plants and animals which are endangered and/or extinct due to mis-informed farming practises encouraged by the government post Second World War. I wanted to create a contemporary jewellery collection which calls to mind the names of those diminishing lives as a way of remembering them and holding them in our consciousness.
10% from each sale will be donated to a related charity to help fund the work they do in saving our wildlife and wild places.
I hand write the words onto the silver before etching to give a raised design which you can feel when you run your finger over the textured surface. Once cleaned and shaped, each bangle is given a heavy 6 micron 18ct gold vermeil plating which will stand up to wear and tear.
These Talisman Bangles are timeless and beautifully handcrafted pieces of jewellery great for everyday wear with a touch of luxury.
- Each piece is unique, please ask if you would like detail photos sending before purchase.

Limited edition Talisman handmade gold cuff.
The surface of this handmade gold cuff has been etched with finely written names of endangered British species. The overall effect is a lovely texture reminiscent of ancient gold jewellery.
I hand write the words onto the silver before etching to give a raised design which you can feel when you run your finger over the textured surface. Once cleaned and shaped, the cuffs are given a heavy gold plate of 6 microns known as gold vermeil.
The Talisman gold cuff is a timeless and beautifully handcrafted piece of contemporary luxury jewellery which calls to mind our diminishing wild species. I hope that wearing these Talisman pieces will help to hold them in our consciousness.
10% of the sales from each piece in my Talisman range goes to a charity doing conservation work to protect those species.
The thickness of gold plating on jewellery is noted in microns and determines how long the gold plating lasts with use. Different thicknesses of plate have different names: gold plate is a thickness greater than 0.5 microns and heavy gold plate or vermeil is a thickness greater than 2.5 microns. For earrings, anything from 1-2 microns of gold plate is the norm. If there are moving parts, 3 microns of gold vermeil is applied. For jewellery which takes more wear such as chains, rings and bracelets, 4-6 microns of heavy gold plate or vermeil will make the piece last. The thickness of the gold plate effects the price of the jewellery and you will find that each piece of my jewellery comes with a note describing this.
Made to a standard size, if you need something made to measure, please let me know.

Talisman Black Mica Quartz Ring with etched moth species.
The Talisman ring is etched with names of endangered British moth species and crowned with a beautiful faceted black mica quartz cabochon. The mica is held in the quartz like a story frozen in time like moths pinned in collectors displays.
My Talisman collection explores the idea that by learning the names of non human species, we are more likely to look after them. By etching their names into silver which is then worn as jewellery, conversations will lead to conservation of these red list species.
The Talisman range was originally inspired by reading The Running Hare by John Lewis-Stemple and Rewilding by Isabella Tree and my subsequent research of red list species.

- Recycled silver and black mica quartz.
